Compound of rätt (“right, law”) + -s- + säkerhet (“security, safety”), attested since circa 1814. Compare with German Rechtssicherheit.

- (law) legal certainty, rule of law, law and order; a condition (commonly of a national state) which means that the rules of law are applied in a predictable way, it also entails legal security and protection against arbitrariness on the part of the authorities
