Etymology
From Proto-Albanian *wripa. Compare Ancient Greek ῥάπτω (rháptō, “to sew together, to stitch”), Lithuanian verpti (“to spin”). Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *reipa, to be connected with Proto-Germanic *raipaz (“rope”), in Old High German reif 'rope, cord', Middle Low German rēp (“sling, rope”), Old Norse reipa (“to fasten with a rope”), and ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *roypnós.
