reverse Magnus effect
English
Etymology
Named after Heinrich Gustav Magnus, the German physicist who investigated it.
Noun
reverse Magnus effect (plural reverse Magnus effects)
- In certain conditions, a spinning ball deflects in a direction contrasting to that predicted direction by the Magnus effect, which is known as the reverse Magnus effect.
The reverse Magnus effect occurs because the boundary layer flow moving against the surface of a rotating sphere undergoes a transition due to turbulence, whereas moving with the rotating surface remains laminar.
