Uncertain. Perhaps from dialectal Reide (“a turning, bend, twist, change”) + -ig, or from Middle High German reide, reit (“twisted, curled”), from Old High German reid (“curly, frizzy, fierce”), from Proto-West Germanic *wraiþ (“angry, hostile”) + -ig.
