regenworm
Dutch
Etymology
First attested 1563, but probably inherited through Middle Dutch and Old Dutch from Proto-Germanic [Term?]. Analysable as regen (“rain”) + worm (“worm”), so called because of the animal's habit of surfacing after rainfall. Cognate with Old High German reganwurm (whence German Regenwurm) and Old English reġnwyrm (whence English rainworm).
