Compare with Idoma onya, Ebira anya (“woman”), further etymology is unclear. The root does not resemble Proto-Yoruboid terms for "woman," see *ɔ́-nɔbɪ̃̀rɪ̃ (“woman”) or *ɔ́-bɪ̃̀rɪ̃ (“female”). Perhaps related to Nupe èyà (“friend”).
