Proto-Yoruboid
Etymology
Cognates are extensive throughout Volta-Niger and several branches of Atlantic-Congo. See Ogbah ntnị̀, Igbo ntị̀, Proto-Gbe *-tó, Arigidi oto, see Proto-Akokoid *ú-tó, Proto-Nupoid *tu-Nukpua, Ebira ʊ̀tɔ́, Oko-Eni-Osayen ɔ́tɔ̃́, Ayere éndí, Proto-Lower Cross River *ú-tɔŋ, Proto-Plateau *two (Kagoro), *gu-toŋ (Jaba), *toŋ (Beromic), *ku-toŋ (Ninzic), and Gur language cognates, see (Proto-Oti-Volta *tʊ, Proto-Eastern Oti-Volta *tuo-. Perhaps from Proto-Volta-Niger *to
Blench explains that a fricatization of the proposed Proto-Niger-Congo *-tuk root, likely caused the /t/ to shift to an /s/. This can be seen in potential cognates Akunnu ansò, Ekiromi asùk, Proto-Akpes *à-sùgù, Akan aso, (see Proto-Kwa *-tʊ̃), Ukaan usùk, Savannas languages (Baatonum soo, Besme tɔ̃ː (“to hear”), Proto-Bua *to(l)).
