From otherwise unattested *agi (“lizard, snake”), from Proto-Germanic *agiz, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ógʷʰis, + *þehsan (whence Middle High German dehsan (“toswingle (flax)”), from *þehsaną, from Proto-Indo-European *tetḱ- (“to cut, hew”), + *-jā.[1]
