Proto-Uralic

Reconstruction

The evidence for the stem-final *-w is scanty, but note the Kamass and Koibal consonant clusters, which are regular reflexes of a Proto-Samoyedic cluster *-ŋw-, perhaps reflecting an old paradigm *wäŋew : *wäŋwe (the latter also explaining the Sámi consonantism). The glide was originally posited due to a common belief that Proto-Uralic words could not contain labial vowels in unstressed syllables, to account for the labial vowels in Finnic and Samoyedic. Compare *kälew, *nataw.

Noun

*wäŋew
