Janhunen (1977) considers Samoyedic *pəjmə- a derivative from *pi (night), suggesting a shorter Proto-Uralic root such as *piľe. SSA speculatively suggests a connection with *pilwe (cloud).

Reconstruction

Loss of expected *l in Finnic is unprecedented.
