Etymology

Uncertain. Here some possibilities:

• The most common opinion is the word derived from Proto-Turkic *apa (“father”) +‎ -ča. (“diminutive suffix”). [1]
• According to Clauson, the word is derived from Proto-Turkic *abuč- (“an unknown verb”) +‎ -ka (“suffix used to create nouns from verbs”) [2]

Notes

• The Chuvash form may be an early loanword from Tatar.
• Also, not related with Proto-Turkic *ạbuč (“handful”).
