Uncertain. Here some possibilities:

  • The most common opinion is the word derived from Proto-Turkic *apa (father) + -ča. (“diminutive suffix”). [1]
  • According to Clauson, the word is derived from Proto-Turkic *abuč- (an unknown verb) + -ka (suffix used to create nouns from verbs) [2]

Notes

  • The Chuvash form may be an early loanword from Tatar.
  • Also, not related with Proto-Turkic *ạbuč (handful).
