Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *-ēˀjas, derived from stative/essive verb stems Proto-Slavic *-ěti + *-ъ.
Cognate with Latvian -ējs, Lithuanian -ėjas.[1]
Suffix
*-ějь m
- Deverbal from stative verbs inflecting in *-ěti. Similar in sense to -er, -ant:
- *zъlodějь (“evil-doer”) ← *zъlъ (“bad, evil”) + *děti (“to do”)
- Deverbal from essive verbs inflecting in *-jati. Similar in sense to -er, -ant:
- *sъlučajь (“occasion”) ← *sъlučati (“to happen”)
