Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kerslá. Equivalent to *čersti + *-slo.

Cognate with Lithuanian ker̃slas (cutter) (kir̃sti, kertù), Old Prussian kersle (pickaxe, axe with 2 blades). Also compare Lithuanian kirkšnìs/kìrkšnis (hip joint), Latvian cir̂ksnis (groin) or Latvian šķerslis or Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌸𐍂𐌰 (hairþra), Old High German hërdar or Latin culter, cultrum.

For the meaning compare French taille (waist), Italian taglia (< Latin taliāre (to cut)).
