Proto-Slavic
Alternative forms
- *uz
Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *uź, cognate with Lithuanian už, Latvian uz. Further etymology is disputed. Derksen tries to derive from a proto-form *ups, but fails to see how it could account for the Baltic facts. Snoj considers relation to Proto-Indo-European *úd(s) (“out”), which otherwise yields Proto-Slavic *vy-.
Preposition
*vъz[1][2][3]
- (+accusative) instead of, in return for
- (+accusative) up, above
- (+accusative) by, beside
Usage notes
Used also as a prefix *vъz-.
