Uncertain:

  • From Proto-Indo-European *wed-ro-, from *wed- (water). Morphologically *ved- + *-rъ. Cognate with Latin vitrum n (glass).
  • From Proto-Indo-European *wedʰro- or *h₂wh₁edʰro- (< *h₂weh₁- (to blow)). Possibly cognate with Proto-Germanic *wedrą n (weather) (or from *h₂wh₁etro- or *wétrom). Compare *vě̀trъ (wind, air).
