Substantivized neuter adjective *vedrъ ((of weather) fair, clear), compare Czech jasno n, dial. Russian ясень f (jasenʹ, clear weather). Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *wedʰrom, whence also Proto-Germanic *wedrą (weather).
