From Proto-Indo-European *(s)tewp-, with cognates Lithuanian tupė́ti (to crowd, to squat), Sanskrit तोपति (topati), तुपति (tupati, to hurt), Ancient Greek τύπτω (túptō, to beat, to smite), Latin stupeō (to stun), possibly Proto-Germanic *þeubaz (thief), *þubōną.
