From Proto-Balto-Slavic *sēˀg-, *senˀg-, from Proto-Indo-European *seg-, *seng-. Cognate with Lithuanian sègti (to fasten, to pin) (1sg. segù, 1sg. past segiaũ), Latvian segt (to cover) (1sg. sȩdzu), Sanskrit सजति (sájati, to adhere to), causative सञ्जयति (sañjayati), Old Persian [script needed] (frahanǰati, to hang), Old Irish suanem (rope) < *sogn-.
