Etymology

Usually compared with Latin cavus (hollow), Sanskrit शून्य (śūnya, empty, baren), Ancient Greek κοῖλος (koîlos, hollow), Old Armenian սոր (sor, hole), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱewH- (to get hollow). May be further related to Proto-Slavic *sovati (to shove) (of undetermined origin).

Sometimes, also compared with Lithuanian sáuja (handful), Latvian saũja (handful).
