Etymology

From *sojь (shaded; blue) + *-а, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *śájas, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱéh₃-yo-s, from *(s)ḱeh₃- (shadow) + *-yós, cognate with Proto-Celtic *skātos (shadow), Proto-Germanic *hēwijaz (dark blue). Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱeh₁y- (to shine, shimmer)[1][2].
