Etymology

From an earlier *puzro, formed as *puzъ (belly) + *-ro. -d- is epenthetic. The term is commonly related to Proto-Slavic *puxъ (blister), which indicates an (indirect) origin from Proto-Indo-European *pews- (to swell). Compare also PIE *puH-.

The original meaning probably was swelling, blistergut similar to Proto-Germanic *būkaz (belly) from pre-Germanic *bʰew- (to blow, to swell).
