Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *per-. Cognate with Ancient Greek πείρω (peírō, to pierce), πόρος (póros).

  • Черных: also περάω (peráō), Sanskrit पिपर्ति (píparti, to overcome, to resist, to bring across)
  • Vasmer: also ἔπαρον (éparon), Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐍂𐌰𐌽 (faran, to travel) and related to Russian Church Slavonic напери (naperi), разперу (razperu)=разпорѭ (razporjǫ) (and *perti, *pьrtь, *pariti, *pero, *porporъ)
