Proto-Slavic

Etymology 1

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *abstrawas. Morphologically from Proto-Slavic *o(b)- + *strovъ, from Proto-Indo-European *s(t)rówos, from *srew- (flow, stream). The literal meaning of the term is one which gets flowed around or possibly flowless (in case the prefix *ob- is applied with abessive function).

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian sravà, prasrava, Latvian strava. With another vocalism: Lithuanian srovė̃, strovė̃, Latvian stràvа, strāvе, East Lithuanian sraujà.

Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit गिरिस्रवा (girisravā), स्रवति (sravati), Ancient Greek ῥόος (rhóos, stream), ῥοή (rhoḗ), ῥέω (rhéō), Proto-Germanic *straumaz (stream, current, river).
