Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *erelis, *arelis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃érō.

Cognate with Lithuanian erẽlis (eagle), arẽlis (dialectal), Latvian ērglis (eagle) and Old Prussian arelie (eagle).The Proto-Slavic form comes from a Proto-Balto-Slavic *arelis (cf. Lithuanian arẽlis (eagle) (dialectal), Old Prussian arelie (eagle)) from the earlier and original *erelis.
