Etymology

Synchronically, equivalent to *mětь, *měta (mark, note) + *-iti, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *méh₁tis (measure), from *meh₁-. Akin to Latin mētior (to measure), Ancient Greek μῆτις (mêtis, counsel, plan), Sanskrit माति (māti, measure).
