From Proto-Balto-Slavic *lágīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *logʰ-éye-ti, causative of *legʰ- (“to lie”). Cognate with Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (lagjan, “to lay”), English lay.
