Etymology
Unknown, possibly akin to Latin crībrum (“sieve, riddle”), Proto-Germanic *hrīdrǭ (“riddle”), Proto-Celtic *kreitro- (“sieve”) (whence Old Irish críathar, Old Welsh cruitr), from Proto-Indo-European *krey- (“to sift, to separate”) + *-da.
