Etymology

Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gwesd- (dense, compact), apparently via o-stem Proto-Balto-Slavic *gwázdas. Akin to Proto-Germanic *kwastuz (tuft; tassel) (u-stem), Albanian gjeth (foilage) (i-stem), possibly Old Armenian կոշտ (košt, stump, clod) (i-stem).
