From Proto-Balto-Slavic *dirs-, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰr̥s-u-, from *dʰers-. Cognate with Latvian dross, drošs (courageous), Lithuanian drąsùs (couageous), Old Prussian dirsos, dyrsos, Ancient Greek θρασύς (thrasús, bold), Sanskrit धृषु (dhṛṣu, bold, courageous, strong).
