From Proto-Balto-Slavic *drangas, from Proto-Indo-European *dregʰ-. Cognate with Lithuanian drañgas (“pole used as a lever”), Proto-Germanic *drangijaz. Perhaps distantly related to *dьržati (“to hold”).
