Etymology

Commonly considered an extension of *dьrati (to tear, to flay) + *-pati, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *derH- (to tear). Likely akin to Ancient Greek δρώπτω (drṓptō, to gaze, to look), Ancient Greek δρέπω (drépō, to reap, to harvest) and Sanskrit दर्पण (darpaṇa, mirror). Possibly also related to Proto-Germanic *trabō (fringe).

  3. (by extension) to strive for, to struggle
