Etymology

Per Trubačev (ESSJa), likely a 0-grade variant of *brězgati. Melnychuk (in context to the Ukranian descendants) considers denominal origin from Proto-Slavic *brězgъ, *brьzgъ.

Compare also dial. Bulgarian бръ́згам (brǎ́zgam, to spew, to leak (for mucus, pus)) (primarily “to strew, to sprinkle” apparently from *brъzgati).

  1. to brisk, to poign, to disdain (for taste)
  2. to stale (for food)

Alternative forms

  • *brězgati (enlongated grade)

Conjugation

  • *braga (pre-distilled alcohol mixture, must) (possibly)

Descendants

  • East Slavic:
    • Ukrainian: бре́згати (brézhaty, to stale), збре́зкнути (zbrézknuty, to disdain)
