Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Probably onomatopoeic, related to *bryzgati. Analogous grade variation is also observed in Southern *prъskati : Northern *pryskati (both “to splash, to spray”). Formally equivalent to Lithuanian brũzgât (to snort), perhaps of shared origin (compare further Proto-Indo-European *bʰrew- (to brew)).

BER joins the meanings to strew (ръся) with to burst, to spew (пръскам), however, the later sense may also reflect *brьzgati.

Verb

*brъzgati impf

  1. (intransitive) to popple → to strew, to drizzle (for liquid)
  2. (by extension) to splatter, to gush
  3. (reflexive) (+ *sę) to burst, to spew (for liquid, mucus)

Alternative forms

  • *bryzgati (enlonged grade)

Conjugation

  • *brudъ (mud, dirt) (possibly)
  • *bruzgati (to charge, to commit) (possibly)
  • *bryzgъ, *bryzga (mucus)
  • *bryskati (to bound)

Descendants

  • South Slavic:
    • Bulgarian: бръ́згам (brǎ́zgam, to strew; to burst) (dialectal)
    • Macedonian: брзга (brzga, to gush, to splatter)
  • West Slavic:
    • Slovak: brzgať
