Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *balźeinas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰelǵʰ- (“to swell, to bulge”). Cognate with Latvian bàlziêns (“cross-beam”), Lithuanian balžíenas (“cross-beam”), Old Prussian balsinis (“cushion”), pobalso (“bolster”).
