Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *balźeinas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰelǵʰ- (to swell, to bulge). Cognate with Latvian bàlziêns (cross-beam), Lithuanian balžíenas (cross-beam), Old Prussian balsinis (cushion), pobalso (bolster).
