Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *blaiskas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰloyǵskos, from *bʰleyǵ-. Formed as the o-grade of *bliziti (to approach, get closer) + *-skъ.

A direct cognate is Latvian blaiskums, blaizgums (spot). Also cognate with Lithuanian blizgas from where the alternative form *blьskъ (< *bliskas).
