Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *blaiskas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰloyǵskos, from *bʰleyǵ-. Formed as the o-grade of *bliziti (“to approach, get closer”) +‎ *-skъ.

A direct cognate is Latvian blaiskums, blaizgums (“spot”). Also cognate with Lithuanian blizgas from where the alternative form *blьskъ (< *bliskas).
