Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *āˀźina, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵ-í-no-s, from *h₂eǵ- (goat). Equivalent to *azь (goat) + *-ьnъ.

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian oženà (goatskin), ožìnis (goat-).

Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit अजिन (ajína, (animal) skin).
