Etymology
According to both Beekes and De Vaan, likely a local borrowing into several Mediterranean languages, a late Proto-Indo-European root *ab- (“tree”) or the like, ultimately from a non-Indo-European substrate. Compare Ancient Greek ἄβιν (ábin, “silver fir or similar conifer”, acc. m/f).
