Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *wip-ró-s, from *weyp- +‎ *-rós.[1] Related Sanskrit विप्र (vípra, “priest, seer”) likely thematicized from Proto-Indo-European *wéyp-r̥ ~ *wip-éns (compare Sanskrit विपन्या (vipanyā́), विपन्यु (vipanyú)), from the same root.[2]
