Etymology
Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *ned-íh₂, from *ned- (“thundering, roaring, rushing”) + *-íh₂. Lubotsky connects it to Ancient Greek Νέδα (Néda, “name of a river”), Middle Low German Nette (“name of a river”).
