Reconstruction:Proto-Hellenic/wródon
Proto-Hellenic
Etymology
Unknown; from some Eastern language. Perhaps from Old Persian *vr̥da- (“flower”) (Persian گل (gul)), from Proto-Iranian *wṛda- (compare Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬜𐬀- (varəδa-), Sogdian [script needed] (ward), Parthian [script needed] (wâr), compare also Middle Iranian borrowings Old Armenian վարդ (vard), Aramaic וַרְדָּא (wardā) / ܘܪܕܐ (wardā), Arabic وَرْدَة (warda), and Hebrew וֶרֶד (wéreḏ)), from Proto-Indo-European *wr̥dʰos (“sweetbriar”) (compare Old English word (“thornbush”), Latin rubus (“bramble”), Albanian hurdhe (“ivy”)). Possibly ultimately a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *Hweldʰ-/*Hwerdʰ- (“to grow”), only attested in Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwárdʰati (compare Sanskrit वर्धति (várdhati), Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬛𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (varədaiti)).
