From Proto-Indo-European *dedru-, *derdru-, a reduplicative form derived from *der- (“to split, separate, crack, chafe, flay”). Compare Sanskrit दद्रू (dadrū, “a skin eruption, a type of leprosy”) and दद्रुक (dadruka, “leprosy”).
