From Proto-Indo-European *senikos (“old”) equivalent to *senaz (“old”) + *-īgaz (“forms adjectives from nouns”). Cognates include Ancient Greek ἕνος (hénos), Sanskrit सन (sána), Old Armenian հին (hin) and Latin senex.
