Etymology

From Pre-Germanic *ǵʰórneh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- or *ǵʰern-. Probably cognate with Latin hernia, Lithuanian žarna. Beekes reconstructs the PIE root with a laryngeal however, *ǵʰerH-, in relation to Ancient Greek χορδή (khordḗ, guts, string made of gut).
