From *ga- + *nōgaz, although the latter has no attested descendants. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₂nóḱe (he has reached, attained), perfective of *h₂neḱ- (to reach). Cognate with Sanskrit अनाश (anā́śa).
