From Proto-Indo-European *per(ǝ)ḱ-no-, *per(ǝ)ḱ- (“mottled, multicoloured; a kind of speckled fish”), from Proto-Indo-European *per-, *prē- (“to spray, inject, snort”). Cognate with Latin porcus (“a kind of fish with spiny fins”), Middle Irish orc (“lax, salmon”), Ancient Greek πέρκη (pérkē, “perch”), Ancient Greek περκνός (perknós, “dark-spotted”).
