From Proto-Indo-European *per(ǝ)ḱ-no-, *per(ǝ)ḱ- (mottled, multicoloured; a kind of speckled fish), from Proto-Indo-European *per-, *prē- (to spray, inject, snort). Cognate with Latin porcus (a kind of fish with spiny fins), Middle Irish orc (lax, salmon), Ancient Greek πέρκη (pérkē, perch), Ancient Greek περκνός (perknós, dark-spotted).
