Etymology
From earlier *šiwä, possibly from Indo-Iranian (cf. Sanskrit शिव (śiva, “auspicious, favorable”)). This has been however disputed. Northern Sami savvit (“to heal”) and Erzya чив (čiv, “good”) may have the same origin.
