Proto-Finnic
Etymology
Unknown. Possibly a borrowing from Baltic: compare Lithuanian šonine (“annex, side chamber”), from šonas (“side”). Has also been compared also with Permic words meaning 'warm': Komi-Permyak шоныд (šonyd, “warm”), Udmurt шуныт (šunyt)[1]. Both comparisons, the Baltic[2] and the Uralic[3], are both semantically and phonetically unlikely.
