Etymology
Compare Sanskrit कोट्ट (koṭṭa), कोट (koṭa), whence Telugu కోట (kōṭa), Kannada ಕೋಟೆ (kōṭe). Compare also the unexplained Amharic, Gurage, Tigrinya, Tigre, Ge'ez ከተማ (kätäma, “military camp, garrison, cantonment”); though Ludolf and Dillmann consider the Geʿez in this meaning a vulgar development or Amharism of Ge'ez ከተማ (kätäma, “extremity, fine; tip, apex”)[1], the opposite may be the case.[2]
