Etymology

From an Austroasiatic language, possibly from Proto-Bahnaric *braːk (peacock), whence Bahnar ămră and Chrau vraq, and, more distantly, Mon မြာ် (pəràik). Ultimately from Proto-Mon-Khmer *mraik (peacock).

Possibly an area word of Southeast Asia. Compare for instance Proto-Dravidian *mayil- (peacock).
