Etymology

From an Austroasiatic language, possibly from Proto-Bahnaric *braːk (“peacock”), whence Bahnar ămră and Chrau vraq, and, more distantly, Mon မြာ် (pəràik). Ultimately from Proto-Mon-Khmer *mraik (“peacock”).

Possibly an area word of Southeast Asia. Compare for instance Proto-Dravidian *mayil- (“peacock”).
