Etymology

Matasović derives this from Proto-Indo-European *h₁eysk- (“to shine, glitter”).[1] However, Zair is confused at this etymology, pointing out that the *ē should not have remained as é before the unpalatalized consonant cluster in Old Irish;[2] instead it should have broken into ía.
